Indifference

I count indifference among my skills and yet, it really only comes into play when faced with the occasional surprise ambush or scolding by a disgruntled authority figure.
I find it hard to stay pro-active when employing this skill and yet it's something I cherish and have worked hard to achieve. It's not apathy- otherwise I wouldn't be concerned about my current level of engagement in the field.
I suppose I'm just curious how others who use this approach keep themselves fighting the good fight.

I've been listening to myself in a few conversations concerning superheroes, and MAN! I had NO clue that I knew so much! I was going on some tangent about Spiderman until I looked up and saw the look on my boyfriends and his brother's face - God it was priceless! I mean isn't the information about venom and Gwen Stacy common knowledge? Or how many times Pheonix has reincarnated? She-Hulk! C'mon who doesn't know about her? Am I alone in this feeling of mass ignorance of others concerning comics? Everyone is missing out on these modern pieces of mythology.

What to DO when some cheeseball movie steals your NAME?

OK...

I'm sure by glancing at my tribe name, you understand my plight. I have been Ultraviolet for over a decade... I've been creating a comic based on the alter-ego psychological battle between my two super-hero personalities Ultraviolet and Infrared (see my pics) with the help of dear friends that also have created alter -ego superhero characters... I sign my paintings ultraviolet, my wearable creations, email newsletters for my Burning Man community... and now I have some sci-fi flop that comes along and pilfers it!

It kinda wigs me out a little that Mila's character in the movie also has long dark hair dyed purple. It bums me out that now my name is instantly associated with this movie and I can no longer use my stories in a published fashion without the association or some lame legal battle.

I asked a friend the other day: "How would you feel if your alter ego and chosen moniker has been Neo for over a decade, complete with your short stories, signatures, etc., and then The Matrix comes out? Better yet, The Matrix comes out, but it's called NEO?

I'm just hoping the movie dies quickly so I can have my name back...

I love it. In case you haven't seen the episodes, here's a description from the official web site on what the show is about:

A GANG of anarchist Robin Hood-style thieves, who dress as superheroes and steal expensive food from exclusive restaurants and delicatessens to give to the poor, are being hunted by police in the German city of Hamburg.

The gang members seemingly take delight in injecting humour into their raids, which rely on sheer numbers and the confusion caused by their presence. After they plundered Kobe beef fillets, champagne and smoked salmon from a gourmet store on the exclusive Elbastrasse, they presented the cashier with a bouquet of flowers before making their getaway.

The latest robbery is part of a pattern over the past several months, suggesting that the thieves deliberately set out to highlight what they perceive as the inequality inherent in German society.

However, the authorities do not agree. Bodo Franz, a police spokesman, said: "They get off feeling they are just like Robin Hood. There are about 30 in the group. But whatever their motives, they are thieves, plain and simple."

Carsten Sievers, the manager of a luxury supermarket in the wealthy Blankenese area of Hamburg, recently watched the robbers run off with trolleys full of expensive foodstuffs, including Kobe beef which, at more than £100 a pound, is always on their illicit shopping list.

In another recent swoop, the gang emptied a groaning buffet table in a top restaurant into sacks, while one of their number held up a sign saying. "The fat years are over" - the title of a hit film currently doing the rounds in Germany.

In internet statements, the gang have made a point of saying their booty is distributed to Hartz IV recipients - the poorest of Germany's long-term unemployed. The benefit is named after the disgraced Volkswagen personnel director Peter Hartz who, before he lost his job with the car-maker in a prostitutes-and-bribes scandal, devised the new means-testing which is loathed and derided by society's most economically challenged.

When the gang robbed the gourmet store in April - triggering a massive police investigation that cost £20,000 in taxpayers' money without an arrest being made - they left a note behind saying: "Without the abilities of the superheroes to help them, it would be impossible for ordinary people to survive in the city of the millionaires."

Police say they are concentrating their investigation on a loose collective of anarchists and malcontents called "Hamburg in Vain", to which they believe the superheroes belong. But they admit there is a certain panache and skill about their robberies.

The gang are also behind black market cinema tickets which they distribute free to the poor, and they have printed leaflets telling passengers how to dodge ticket inspectors on the city's underground and buses.

Mr Franz said: "They try to make crime fun but are politically motivated."

I have the abilities to read minds, body languages, screw up electronics if I walk by them, answer phones seconds b4 it rings, bring a dream to life, astral project, I have frequent visions at least once a week, saw whats gonna happen when the meteor hits Earth but I dont know the date, project my soul into outerspace, teleport(only in an intense dream or vision), control the wind(somedays I cant seem to focus but most of the time the wind and goes where I want it to go, almost levitated a few times but that requires a gigantic energy flow, and I can be rebellious only when I'm wrongfully accused I get very raged and intensely violent.

How to be NEW

I have been on Tribe for a really long time now, and I haven't really done anything, so I guess the trouble is, that I am sort of a Super who serves the world around me... but now I need new inspiration, and real goals that really help people, and have a social impact.
I have enjoyed my solo career, masked in the shadow, ready to jump out and stun the masses everywhere, but working in alternate dimensions is so lonely. Now that Burning Man is over and I have overcome obsticles in my own spirit and personal life, I am ready to serve humanity at large.

If you have an exciting adventure and need super-cooperation from a newly armored Matahari, let me know... Bordum and lack of usefulness are the very death of me.

I think instead of having multiple personalities, I am actually like a sock puppet to many super heroes from the past, though, none that recieved press.
ONe I have is EC (ergonomically correct). I'm designed specifically to do a variety of tasks and services, I'm designed to fit the way that is kindest to your/my body.
Another is The Kidney. I can walk into a bad vibe area, suck in the oogies and eebies, process that and spit out joy. At least take the rough edges down a bit, encourage breath.
Yet another doesn't have a name yet, and his trick is he needs to find his super-power. He employs group participation. Silly guy.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of participating in the Xara Dulzura, a BM-style campout in the mountains outside of San Diego. It not surprisingly turned into a melting pot of soul-searching decadence. Having just moved to LA from NY, I decided that this epic tale of debauchery would be a good 'get to know ya' vehicle, an icebreaker if you will, for the pubic at large.

I present to you my very subjective yet frighteningly accurate account of Xara 2005. All the cool kids are in it! well, not ALL of them, but everyone in this is a rock star! If you're getting this email from me, you are very likely directly implicated in this piece. Here's about 15 seconds of fame for ya.

The names of the innocent were changed long ago for this tale, so I didn't have to change anything, except for the Adept Temptress. what a sketchy bunch of motherfuckers!

i jsut moved to LA from NYC and i was just wondering where all the people are here who like to dress up and act silly??? and then there you guys were! crazy. i was wondering, do you guys do anything? like parties, or crash parties--hey! i know i'm new and all, but wouldn't it be great if a whole bunch of superheros just up and crashed parties on a regular basis? and we could even crash the clubs that are all too cool for any of us also. i'm a founding member in the nyc based greene dragon (www.greenedragon.org --it's hard to explain), so i'm looking for a group of people who like to dress silly and go out and do odd things as a group in public. who's with me???

In case somebody here is interested in the following events, Robert Crumb (60’s artist/writer, creator of Mr. Natural, the Snoid, glorifier of big-butt/ big-legged women), and Jeff Smith (creator/artist of “Bone”) are both making appearances in town in the next few days.

Crumb will be at the more prestigious of sites: New York Public Library’s main branch, 5th Av and 42nd St, Celeste Bartos Forum (if I remember correctly, that’s the big meeting room on the second floor, but best call to be sure, 1 (212) 930-0571) tomorrow, April 14th, from 7:00 pm; Smith will be at Jim Hanley’s Universe, 4 West 33rd St. (across from ESB), 1 (212) 268-7088 (or www.jhuniverse.com) , Wednesday, April 20th, from noon to 2:00.

Crumb, as is probably obvious to everyone who possesses even a marginal interest in comics by this time, has achieved “Master” status in this country. Kind’ a like Berne Hogarth, or Will Eisner, he has enough history and an established paper-trial (the good kind, for once) to where he could coast on his reputation through the rest of his existence is he so chooses. I’d hope not –I once attended a lecture by Hogarth he gave at Parsons some years back, and the man spent three of the longest hours of my professional life pontificating on nothing. Whereas Eisner, as most of us know, was working on new projects right up to the last days of his life. Crumb has me worried in that area ‘cause in recent interviews, he’s started re-editing the old days, saying essentially that, “(whine!) The DRUGS made me write and draw all that crazy shit!! Really, it DID!”

To which I reply, “What pure, USDA-inspected, grade triple A, horse-dookies.” Like that song that was popular some months back, “’Til I Got High,” points out, drugs PREVENT you from doing any amount of labor, whether with a pen in your hand, or with a shovel. Robert Crumb put his screaming libido AND his anger at the nasty, petty society that raised him, down on the printed page for all the world to see, and he should be proud of the body of work that resulted therefrom; denying any or all of it by claiming “the devil made me do it” is worse than disingenuous. I’m saying all this mostly to admit that attending the NYPL event may be merely ego-stroking a guy who’s already put himself on the back-shelves of graphic storytelling history.

Smith, on the other hand, may be worth a listen, but of course the venue he’ll be at won’t be conducive to actually conversing with the man; glad-handing and selling product is the priority, naturally. Still in all, he deserves a lot of respect for the “Bone” project, just from sheer number of pages generated over –what?—the past ten years? Only other person outside the Marvel/DC pipeline to produce that much work on one subject for so many years is Stan Sakai, creator/artist of “Usagi Yojimbo.” Problem with Sakai, however, is he takes his stuff WAY too seriously …. Ladies and Gents, somebody please tell this guy that it’s a comic book featuring a bunny rabbit wielding a cute, stubby sword, even if the character is decked out in midevelian Japanese Samurai drag. This ain’t Ceiling-of-the-Sistene Chapel important. Back to the point, from what I’ve been told, Smith is a lighter, more accessible person to approach, so maybe it’s worth a stop there next week to see if one can talk with him even for a couple mintues.

I can't make either one myself, so if anyone from here can, please do post back here and let us read what you thought of them, OK?

After World War II, troops returned home in celebration. The Dude Ranch was at a fever pitch. In the midst of a Billie Holiday show, the city shut the club down naming it a “public nuisance”. A year later the club re-opened under new management and it was roaring once again. It filled a deep need in the people to congregate, to enjoy. With all its heart and soul, joy and sadness, the music brought people together as human beings.

The Multiwayz team crafted a pro-forma incorporating sustainability. We have created plans for a seminal mixed-use space, which will facilitate a diversity of individuals and non-profit organizations to become empowered in their own community-building. SoloMAX here in SF. I’m working on a Black Rock Arts Grant... seeking people interested in gathering in Mexico next winter holidays to develop a model summer camp-like program that will be shared through the web and touring schools with a team.

My goal in life is to make public schools more like summer camps. The method is mission-oriented education, which makes the process of learning an exciting journey into the unknown. This place, Roblito, Nayarit, on the Central Pacific coast just south of Mazatlan, has many adventure opportunities: Water(estuary and ocean) for surfing and water skiing, mountains for hiking, horses to ride, fishing, biking... just about anything.... and lots of land to build on for the future.

Getting there is super cheap to fly or bus... costing around $200 from southern US states.
We can stay in the village community or 4km away in our very private camping area. Also, there is a semi-abandoned hotel on a near-by beach that an old lady looks after, and we could rent for almost nothing and use to party like there's no tomorrow.

What I'm looking for.... are other people interested in developing a summer camp program-- the Action Hero Training Camp. Burning Man and Rainbow gatherings are already the most bad ass summer camps.... and the energy from these is changing the world for the better, but there is so much going on at these events... it is hard to focus on creating a program. So... imagine taking the best of Burning Man and Rainbow to Roblito... when the north is cold and wet in the winter... to create a summer camp... where it is warm and we can play on a playa with waves.

The intention is to create annual Action Hero Training Camp from Christmas to March Break, and have it open to families, schools, corporate folk.... anyone who wants to get there freak on and discover their mission. Then... we can get paid to do our thing. But, we need to start somewhere, and that is here and now. If you are interested.... speak up, so I can put your name in the grant. The grant is due Mar. 31, so get back to me ASAP!
